THE PLACE WHERE EVERYBODY IS A SOMEBODY, AND THE GROUND IS LEVEL AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS.

Hurts come whether or not you choose it, but healing comes only because you choose it.

RATIONALE

The counselling ministry operating at the Portmore New Testament Church of God Bayside was organized in 2004 and officially launched in 2006 on the 6th of June.  With the population increasing and breakdown in family life, coupled with the moral and social decay in our society, the Portmore New Testament Church of God foresaw the necessity for a counselling ministry to cater to these and other needs in the community.

The ministry therefore, seek to offer therapy and guidance in dealing with stress-related illnesses, pre and post marital counselling, children and adolescent issues, anti-social and other abnormal behavior, family relational issues, parental, spiritual and career guidance when requested.

Christian Counselling Ministry

As Christian mental health professionals, we are concerned about the dignity, rights, responsibilities and needs of each individual whether as clients or colleagues.  Christian love and respect for all persons within our care must be shown (2 Corinthians 1:3-7). Counsellors should be impartial in dealing with and treating counselees.

Clients or counselees deserve the right to make their own informed decisions and take their own actions. Counsellors help clients to view various options and make their own decisions. Concern must be given to the community, nuclear family, church, extended family and neighborhood in which the client lives.  Decisions made must consider these aspects of client’s life.

Clients must establish trustworthy relationship with the counsellor which will determine the success of the relationship. Client has the right to choose.  Honesty plays a vital tole in this relationship. As problem is defined, a clear goal and treatment plan should be embarked upon. If a counsellor meets upon a case outside his/her scope it should be reported and referred as soon as possible.

The privacy of every client must be respected and illegal and unwarranted disclosure of confidential information must be avoided. The Client has the right to waive their right to privacy. However, in the case of imminent danger to the client or others, or where legal requirement demands the revelation of confidential information, there is an exemption and compliance after consultation with other counsellors.

Family counselling involves the family, not individuals, and should be treated as a unit. It is recommended that this be done by specialists.

Children do have rights to privacy; however, minors should be made aware of the limits of their privacy. Minors as well as incompetent clients need to have adult’s consent.

Counselling is offered in a covenant of trust, confidentiality and records are maintained.

Telephone counselling is done upon request or in the office at a cost. We have a grief support group of over twenty certified counsellors who play a vital role in giving support to persons suffering from traumatic experiences.

The counsellor must establish and maintain the acceptable boundaries for a professional relationship. Clients sometimes may need to know your qualification as a counsellor before trust is developed.
